There is nothing quite like the sound of a boiling pot, the smell of Cajun spices in the air, and the sight of a community coming together for a great cause. This year’s annual The 189 Club Shrimp Boil was one for the record books, and we are still buzzing from the excitement!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised almost $28,000 this year!

Every dollar raised goes directly toward our mission of supporting youth projects. Whether it’s providing scholarships, supporting local livestock shows, or funding essential youth programs in our community, this money ensures that the next generation has the resources they need to succeed. Seeing the community invest so heavily in "the kids" is what makes The 189 Club so special.

The 189 Club Updates and Winners!

Hello everyone,

Our mid year meeting just took place where we discussed the results of last season's fundraising and scholarship money given out . This year, the total amount given out was $68,249.40! Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters for everyone's tremendous efforts in not only putting together these events, but also for donating and spreading the news of The 189 Club activities.

We also announced the winners of the raffle we were hosting earlier this year. The 1st place winner of the trip, was Linda Shartzer, not only a 189 Club member but also a Director with HLSR. The 2nd place winner was Mike Martinez also a 189 Club member and Director, Mike decided to donate the 2 nd place winnings back to the club to help the youth of Texas. Thank you very much, Mike and to all who participated.

Our next regular member meeting will be held on November 6, 2024 and as we did at this meeting, we will hold a drawing for several prizes.

Here is the monthly Report from our Calf Scramble Winner - Jarret

Hello everyone. Hope your summer is going well. For me Summer is working and getting a lot of things done I normally don’t have time for when I’m in school. I have been very busy working on cleaning up around the barns and spraying brush when I’m not caring and working with my heifers. I also celebrated my 16th Birthday on June 15th. Now that I’m sixteen I will be getting my DL soon and then the real work will start.

On June 3rd I put 22 eggs in my incubator for a customer that wanted to purchase them. I put 11 red productions and 11 bantams in the incubator. It takes 21 days to hatch chicken eggs. The chicks hatched on June 23rd and the buyer came and got them on the 25th. I now have 21 more eggs in the incubator which are mostly bantams this go around.

Registered heifer validation was on June 21st in Sinton. I scheduled Lexi to get her bangs vaccination on the same day at Sinton Vet Clinic. Me and my grandfather took Lexi to the vet for her vaccination and to the fairgrounds for validation.

Also on June 23rdI assisted our female schnauzer Daisy as she gave birth to 6 healthy puppies. She had 4 girls and 2 boys. I can’t wait to see them grow. On the 27th we took the puppies and both parents to the vet to have the tails docked and declaws removed on the puppies. Daisy was not happy when the vet took her puppies to the back. She couldn’t wait to home so she could get back with her puppies.

On the 28th I had a 4-H Awards Interview at the County Extension Office. To answer many questions about involvement in 4-H, leadership, and community service projects. After my interview, I received my 4-H record book which I received a red ribbon. I have completed a record book every year on Beef since the 3rd grade. I also received my ribbons for the 10 photos I entered in the 2022 State Photography Contest. I received 3 Blue, 6 Red, and 1 White ribbons.

This month I bought six sacks of feed from my breeder Justin that I feed Lexi. I also bought some cotton seed and range cubes from Tractor Supply. This month I had to buy 20 sacks of creep feed and 10 sacks of chicken feed. The creep feed is fed to my older heifers that are penned with Lexi. Below is a picture of part of my feed room.

$20,000 Scholarship - Danniele Kopesky

Congratulations to Danniele Kopesky - Recipient of our $20,000 Scholarship

The 189 Club is happy to announce that this past Saturday we were able to meet with Danniele Kopesky and her mother to let her know she will be the recipient of our $20,000 scholarship. We believe hard work and dedication deserves to be rewarded, and that's exactly what we intend to do. Ms. Kopesky will be using her scholarship to attend the University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a career in Nursing. Good luck in college, Danniele. The 189 Club is rooting for you.

This scholarship would not have been possible without the help from the community, our members, and those who've supported our cause. All in all, we were able to raise north of $70,000 thanks in part to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, who were generous enough to donate to our cause as well.

Thank you all who continue to support us. Thanks to you, young kids like Danniele are getting the opportunity to pursue higher education and are one step closer to graduating debt free.

General Body Meeting on April 26th 2022

First, we would like to, once again, thank everyone who contributed to the 2022 HLSR Auction and helped us give over $57,000 for student scholarships, we truly could not have done it without you all.

We would like to inform all 189 Club members of our next general body meeting, taking place on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022. We will be hosting it at Molina's Cantina at 7901 Westheimer, Houston, TX 77063.

Happy hour/social will be from 6 PM to 7 PM, then we'll have the actual meeting from 7 PM to 8 PM.

On that note, in the meeting, we will discuss future key dates for the 189 Club, including our officer election meeting that is coming up in the summer and finalizing the date for the 2023 Shrimp Boil.

2025 HLSR COOK-OFF Starts Feb 27th, 2025

Get ready the Houston Rodeo is here!

The Houston Rodeo Cook-off starts February 24th and ends on the 26th, but the fun doesn't end there. The Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show is on February 28th. Don't miss out on the food and entertainment!

Friendly Reminder that all the invoices for dues have been sent out this past weekend, so if you haven't paid your dues please do so as soon as possible. Paying your dues now will help us know how much money we have for the kids when the auction begins.

Maggie & Skeeter Won Grand Champion at the Yoakum Project Show!

In 2021, Maggie managed to catch the calf at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo that The 189 Club sponsored and with the $1,750.00 in prize money, she bought a beef heifer to raise as a project and compete at the Yoakum Project Show, where she proceeded to win the Grand Champion award!

Membership Dues Reminder

Hi Gang,

I hope all of you are well out there? Wife and I had Covid at Christmas and stayed out till the Shrimp Boil. Now we had a great turn out for the Shrimp Boil and Auctions, we raised over $22,000 before expenses and cleared almost $18,000 for the Kids. The club is on track to spend over $50K to support the kids of Texas at HLSR Auctions this year. I need all members to send in your $100 annual dues this year ( more is accepted to add as donations). The support has been great and we need to keep pushing since Covid has slowed our process to help the Kids. We have already bought a calf for the Calf Scramble in the name of Jim Irby, we have been attending meetings at the Reliant Center, getting involved with the Auction Committees, and signing up New Members. Overall, we have been doing our best to stay ahead of all these crazy Covid restrictions.

I will send out more information soon and try to setup a meeting before the Rodeo starts, Send me ideas of possible dates and places to meet..

It is going to be a very busy next 2 months.
